49ers must be willing to move on from do-everything DB in free agency

· Yahoo Sports

The 2025 NFL season is almost over, as the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will square off in Super Bowl 61 at Levi's Stadium on Sunday.

While the San Francisco 49ers will watch one team hoist a Lombardi Trophy on their home field, they're preparing for the 2026 season with the hopes of winning a sixth Super Bowl in their franchise history.

Part of that preparation is deciding which pending free agency to keep or move on from. Among San Francisco's roughly 30 players ready to hit the market is defensive back Jason Pinnock.

Let's take a look at the decision John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan will have to make:

Jason Pinnock 2025 season recap

Pinnock joined the 49ers last offseason after one year with the New York Jets and three with the New York Giants. Bringing some experience to a young room, the 26-year-old went on to play 46% of San Francisco's defensive snaps in 17 games and finished the year with 41 tackles.

Potential replacements for Jason Pinnock

If Pinnock leaves, the 49ers would still have Ji'Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha and Marques Sigle at safety. That group could grow to be a solid one, but San Francisco should be looking to upgrade.

If the 49ers are willing to spend money on the position in free agency, Jaquan Brisker, Kamren Curl, Kyle Dugger and Kevin Byard could step in and be starters in 2026.

What contract could Jason Pinnock receive as a free agent?

Pinnock played last season on a one-year, $2.2 million contract. He probably won't make much more than that in 2026, so a team could probably sign him to a deal between $2 million and $4 million.

Should the 49ers re-sign Jason Pinnock?

Pinnock did his job in 2025, playing on defense and special teams, but once Mustapha came back from injury, his playing time decreased significantly. San Francisco should look to upgrade the position group, whether that's in the draft or free agency. Thank Pinnock for his service over the last year and find someone better.
