The Boston Red Sox had its focus on bolstering its starting rotation over the winter. They went out and acquired Sonny Gray in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, Johan Oviedo in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Ranger Suarez on a five-year free agent deal.

But it was not only pitchers that the front office added to the roster. They also acquired Willson Contreras in a trade with the Cardinals and came to terms on a one-year deal with Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Now, Boston has set itself up to fight for an AL East title. However, they may not be done making moves just yet.

There is no denying that the Red Sox have a surplus of starting pitching. Garrett Crochet will lead the rotation, likely followed by Ranger Suarez and Sonny Gray. However, that is where it gets a bit more unclear.
Brayan Bello, Johan Oviedo, Kutter Crawford, Patrick Sandoval, Tanner Houck, and Garrett Whitlock could all fight for the final two spots.
It would be smart for the Red Sox to figure out their starting rotation early and dangle some of those who did not make the cut to other teams in a trade. Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly believes Brayan Bello could be the odd man out for Boston.
"The San Diego Padres are the exact type of team that makes sense for Bello because they need a No. 3 for 2026 to go behind Michael King and Nick Pivetta, while also alleviating pressure on Joe Musgrove in his return after missing all of 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery."
Kelly could see the Red Sox striking a deal with the Padres that sends Bello to San Diego. This would help both teams, as Boston could get some value for someone they might be sold on, and San Diego would get some starting pitching depth that they desperately need.
