ROUNDUP: Maroons beat Lions; Woods men win, women narrowly miss 1st victory

Robinson continued its late-season surge, downing Little Illini Conference rival Marshall 62-51 in Illinois high school boys basketball action Tuesday night in the Maroons' gym.

Coach Randy Bishop's Robinson squad has now won seven of its last eight games, raising the Maroons' records to 13-16 overall and 2-5 in the LIC going into Wednesday's contest at Notre Dame La Salette in Georgetown, Ill.

Against the visiting Lions on Tuesday, Robinson built leads of 16-10, 27-19 and 41-33 at the quarter breaks, and then overcame an 18-point Marshall outburst in the fourth quarter.

Cruz Dunlap led the Maroons with 18 points, while Isaac Hardiman added 12, and Andrew Sparks and Felix Reynolds scored 10 each.

Tucker Osborn topped Marshall (12-15, 3-4) with 14 points, seven assists and seven rebounds, and teammate Garrett Pugh added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Marshall plays 6:30 p.m. Monday at Clinton, Ill., in the Class 2A St. Joseph Ogden Regional.

In other boys prep basketball:

• Cumberland 65, Martinsville 27 — At Toledo, Ill., the powerhouse host Pirates used balanced scoring and a defense that limited the Bluestreaks to single-digit point totals in each quarter in a nonconference game Tuesday night.

Seven Cumberland players scored eight points or more, led by 12 each from Kaleb Bierman and Isaac Vanetta. Kayden Jenkins tallied six points for Martinsville, while Jaxson Miller, Drake Brant and Gabe Griffin had five apiece.

The Bluestreaks (4-26) open the Class A Tuscola Regional with a 6 p.m. Monday game against the host Warriors (24-6). Cumberland improved to 25-4.

College men's basketball

• SMWC 81, Oakland City 67 — Behind a double-double from DeYon Bell, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods pulled away in the second half for a River States Conference win Tuesday night in Knoerle Center.

Bell finished with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, helping the Pomeroys control the glass throughout the contest.

SMWC (13-14 overall, 7-8 in the RSC) trailed 36-35 at halftime before erupting for 46 second-half points. The Pomeroys shot 56.7 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes and finished the game at 49.1 percent overall.

Stanley Harley led the Pomeroys with 16 points off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting, including two three-pointers. Malachi Pearson added 10 points, while Mike Ajukwa contributed 10. Quamar Hobbs and Terrance Hill each chipped in eight points.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods dominated the rebounding battle, 45-30, and turned 15 offensive boards into 26 second-chance points. The Pomeroys also outscored Oakland City 40-32 in the paint and extended their lead to as many as 21 in the second half.

The Pomeroys plays host to IU Columbus in the regular-season finale at 3 p.m. Saturday, with pregame Senior Day festivities.

College women's basketball

• Oakland City 62, SMWC 59 — At Oakland City, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods erased a double-digit halftime deficit and pulled within one possession late before falling on Tuesday evening in River States Conference play.

The three-point losing deficit was the closest this season for the Pomeroys, who dropped to 0-26 overall and 0-15 in the RSC.

The Pomeroys trailed by 18 late in the second quarter but stormed back with a dominant third period, outscoring the Mighty Oaks 22-13 to cut the margin to single digits heading into the final frame.

Samara Douglas recorded a double-double to lead SMWC, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds, including eight on the defensive glass. The sophomore added three assists and helped anchor a strong rebounding effort as the Pomeroys finished with 40 boards. Haley Polston paced the offense with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Abigail Parker added 13 points and five rebounds, while Elayni Stone chipped in 10 points.

SMWC struggled offensively in the second quarter, shooting just 1-of-12 from the field, as Oakland City built a 37-19 halftime advantage. However, the Pomeroys responded with one of their most efficient stretches of the season in the third, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and converting all five free throw attempts.

The Pomeroys trimmed the deficit to three in the closing minutes, but could not complete the comeback. SMWC shot 37.7 percent for the game and scored 30 points in the paint.

Oakland City (3-24, 2-13 RSC) was led by Elise Williams with 22 points and Allyson Rideout with 20.

SMWC plays host to IU Columbus at 1 p.m. Saturday in a Senior Day season finale at Knoerle Center.

Prep football

• Crum new Falcons coach — Former North Montgomery defensive coordinator Nate Crum will take over as head coach at North Vermillion High School.

Crum is the school's 22nd head football coach. Athletic Director Martin Brown announced Crum's hiring on Tuesday. Crum will replace former coach Brian Crabtree, who took the West Vigo head coaching position.

"We were looking for a leader who could ignite our program, build real relationships with our kids, and establish a clear identity for North Vermillion football," Brown said in a school news release. "Coach Crum stood out throughout the process for his preparation, vision, and commitment to doing things the right way."

Brown said places a strong emphasis on player development, strength and conditioning, and building relationships that extend beyond Friday nights.

"We were impressed not only by Nate’s football knowledge, but by the way he consistently brought everything back to our kids and our program," Brown said. "He has a plan, he has energy, and he has a genuine desire to invest in North Vermillion football for the long term."

Crum inherits a program that finished 0-10 last season but posted records of 9-2 in 2024 and 8-4 in 2023.

College football

• Engineers boost Special Olympics — Rose-Hulman football team dove into the 26th annual 2026 Polar Plunge in Terre Haute last weekend, and the team raised $7,057 for the Special Olympics, raising close to $1,500 more than the second-place team.

The Polar Plunge is the signature Special Olympics Indiana Fundraiser. Since its inception, more than 42,000 Hoosiers have taken the plunge, supporting Special Olympics athletes across Indiana. The Polar Plunge is considered the largest fundraising event benefiting the Special Olympics in the state.

Individuals and groups take the plunge, jumping into frigid and icy waters, soliciting donations from family and friends.

College softball

• Sycamore top freshman — Indiana State freshman pitcher Caylee Gaytan earned this week's Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week honor after posting a 2-0 record in a four-game stretch.

In four appearances, Gaytan got two pitching wins, allowed just 13 hits over 20 innings of work and struck out 22 batters. She posted a stellar 0.70 earned-run average, surrendering only two earned runs during the stretch.

In her first 35 collegiate innings, Gaytan has a 1.20 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP, with three complete games and a save. She ranked seventh in NCAA Division I in strikeouts entering this week.

College equine

• Creech leads SMWC — At Upland, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College performed well at the Taylor Western Show 2026, earning High-Point Team honors on Sunday while Carmen Creech was named High-Point Rider after a series of top finishes across multiple classes.

On Saturday in reining, Claire Coryell secured second place while Bella Monnett added a fourth-place finish. Carmen Creech placed third in ranch riding and followed with a third-place finish in Level 2 horsemanship (HMS). Clair Schoettmer earned second in open horsemanship, and Courtney Hamrick captured first place in Level 2 horsemanship. Kinsey Hall added a fourth-place finish in the same division.

In Level 1 Horsemanship, Trinity Hudnall finished fourth and Bella Parker placed fifth. Allie Shaughnessy claimed second in rookie B, while Payton Ross placed fifth in rookie A. The beginner division saw Ashley Haraway lead the way with a first-place finish. Marissa Burnett followed with second place, and Xander Howells rounded out the class with a sixth-place result.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods carried its momentum into Sunday competition. Parker improved to second in Level 1 horsemanship, and Hudnall added a fourth-place finish. Jessica Andres placed fourth in rookie B, while Ross finished fourth in rookie A. Howells earned fifth in beginner.

In reining, Monnett secured second place and Coryell placed fifth. Creech highlighted the day with a first-place finish in ranch riding and a second-place ride in Level 2 horsemanship. Schoettmer placed fourth in ranch riding and added second in open horsemanship, while Monnett earned third in open horsemanship. Courtney Hamrick claimed another first-place finish in Level 2 horsemanship, and Kinsey Hall added a third-place result in the same class.

Creech’s consistent high finishes throughout the weekend earned her High-Point Rider recognition, while the Pomeroys capped the event by claiming High-Point Team honors on Sunday.

SMWC returns to action Feb. 21–22 at the Purdue Hunt Seat Show in Culver.

College track and field

• Engineers honored — Rose-Hulman earned two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly awards, with Antoine Cooper being named Throws Athlete of the Week and James Kaunas claiming Jumps Athlete of the Week.

Cooper had a record-breaking performance at the DePauw Invite, breaking the Rose school record in the weight throw with a first-place finish at 59 feet, 1.5 inches. Kaunas won the triple jump at the DePauw Invite with a jump of 44-2.

Among the women, the Engineers' Rose Talbert earned Sprint Athlete of the Week, and Jocelyn Onstot got Distance Athlete of the Week. Talbert broke her own school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.39 seconds. Onstot broke the Rose-Hulman record in the mile at 4 minutes, 54.32 seconds.

Rose's teams compete in the Indiana State Open at noon Saturday.

• Garnett earns honor — ISU junior Aliseonna Garnett was named MVC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Wednesday afternoon by the conference office after another strong performance at the Music City Challenge.

Garnett posted two of her top marks this season in the throws events, with marks of 15.27m (50-1.25) in the shot put and 18.66m (61-2.75) in the weight throw. The Indianapolis native finished third out of 31 competitors in the weight throw, while also finishing sixth in the invite section of the shot put. Her marks in both events were her second-best this season, breaking the 15-meter mark in the shot put for the second time this season while also recording her third weight throw mark over the 18.50-meter mark. She leads the Missouri Valley Conference in the shot put this season while also sitting second in the MVC in the weight throw. In addition, she ranks eighth in the Great Lakes Region and 62nd nationally in shot put while also sitting 14th in the region in the weight throw.

Garnett’s weekly honor is the second of her career, having also earned MVC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors following the season-opening John Gartland Invitational.
