A dramatic video, taken from security footage, captured the scary incident in which a pickup truck and an SUV, stopped at a busy intersection, fell into a massive hole in south-central Omaha.
The SUV appeared to have fallen deeper into the fissure than the pickup truck.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of 67th and Pacific Sts.
Good Samaritans stopped to help
No injuries were reported. The pickup driver was able to get out of his vehicle and pull himself out onto the street, while bystanders helped lift the SUV driver out of the hole, The Associated Press reported.
“We are grateful to them for jumping into action and quickly providing help,” Omaha police spokesperson Officer Sarah Martier said in a statement.
Both vehicles were hauled out of the hole by a heavy-duty tow truck later that afternoon.
Omaha Public Works indicated on its website that the sinkhole was the result of a water main break.
Police said they expect the road to be closed for several days, warning the sinkhole could possibly expand.
The area serves the University of Nebraska at Omaha and draws residents to a thriving entertainment district teeming with restaurants, retail shops and a movie theatre.
