Katie Burchill's late basket and free throw lifts Valley City past Carrington

Feb. 28—MAYVILLE — A basket and free throw by Katie Burchill with 10 seconds to play lifted Valley City to a 60-59 girls basketball win over Carrington Saturday in Mayville.

It came after a frenzied comeback attempt by Carrington, which erased a 54-44 deficit late in the fourth quarter, only to fall short with the season-ending loss.

Valley City led 26-22 at halftime and 45-39 heading into the fourth quarter. Eventually, the Hi-Liners went up by 10, prompting Carrington's rally, which saw the Cardinals take the lead late. Trailing by 2, Burchill put up a basket on a rebound and was fouled on the play. Her ensuing free throw proved to be the game-winner for Valley City.

Burchill led all scorers with 22 points, while teammates Skye Nielson and Dacota Potratz added 17 and 11 points, respectively. Burchill also had nine rebounds.

Valley City was 21-of-43 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. The Hi-Liners had 29 rebounds.

Carrington's top scorer was Anista Hoornaert, who had 21 points, while Marah Johnson had 18 and Mya Neis had 10. The Cardinals were 17-of-42 from the field and 20-of-26 at the line and had 22 rebounds.

The win put Valley City into the state Division A tournament Thursday-Saturday in Jamestown.
