The San Francisco 49ers and left tackle Trent Williams have been in a contract dispute over the last few weeks, and it doesn't sound like it's been getting much better.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, there has been no progress on a new deal for Williams, meaning the chances of him hitting the market have only increased.

"There's been no progress since last week when the 49ers talked about the optimism that they would get a new deal done with Williams," Garafolo said. "There is still work that needs to be done over the next couple of days for Williams not hit the market. If he does, there is expected to be interest."

At age 37, Williams is still one of the best offensive linemen in football and arguably the best left tackle. The 12-time Pro Bowler would be one of the top players on the free agency market if he gets there.

San Francisco struggling to get something done with Williams is obviously terrible for Kyle Shanahan's squad, but it is a fantastic development for the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Left tackle is a pressing need for the Bears, as running it back with Braxton Jones or Ozzy Trapilo as the starter wouldn't elevate Chicago into a legitimate NFC contender.

Signing Williams would take the Bears' offense to the next level and provide Ben Johnson's offense with an elite blindside protector to keep quarterback Caleb Williams upright.

Green Bay is likely to lose starting left tackle Rasheed Walker in free agency, but replacing him with Williams would be an upgrade for the Packers.

Broderick Jones has been disappointing for Pittsburgh so far at left tackle, so if Williams hits the market, we could see the Steelers ditch Jones and sign Williams to be the new starter. Jones also recently had fusion surgery, putting his future with the team in question.

The 49ers would be foolish to let go of Williams. However, if both sides can't come to terms on a new contract and the future Hall of Famer enters free agency, the Bears, Packers, and Steelers should pursue Williams as he enters the final stages of his illustrious career.
