EDITORIAL: Canada fails to deport Iranian agents

· Toronto Sun

As far as we know, Prime Minister Mark Carney has not watered down his view of the Islamist dictatorship in Iran.

To use his words in his initial statement about the U.S.-Israel attack on the murderous regime:

“Canada’s position remains clear: The Islamic Republic of Iran is the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East, has one of the world’s worst human rights records, and must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons.”

To demonstrate how seriously Canada takes this issue, he added that:

“Canada stands with the Iranian people in their long and courageous struggle against Iran’s oppressive regime.”

Finally, he emphasized that:

“Canada has listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity, and has sanctioned 256 Iranian entities and 222 individuals in response to the regime’s repression and its violence both against its own people, and persistently, beyond its borders.”

Only one senior Iranian official deported from Canada

Given that, it’s fair to ask about a report in the Globe and Mail that the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) has only deported one senior Iranian official from Canada under a federal ban, when it’s feared far more are already living here with many others attempting to infiltrate Canada to escape the war in Iran.

According to the Globe , the CBSA “has been investigating 95 cases involving possible high-ranking members of the Iranian regime … according to figures provided by the agency.

“Of those 95, the CBSA has identified 28 people it believes are inadmissible since senior Iranian officials were banned from the country in November, 2022 …

“But the CBSA has so far removed only one official from Canada – a number that remains unchanged from last year.”

Mojdeh Shahriari, a Vancouver-based refugee lawyer and co-founder of StopIRGC, told the Globe she believes there are almost 600 senior regime officials living in Canada. A 2023, investigation by Global News estimated the number at more than 700 – who are not under investigation.

“My conclusion, unfortunately, is that not much has been done,” she said. “When you have just one person deported, that speaks volumes.”

What it suggests – aside from the glaring inadequacies of Canada’s byzantine and lax deportation system – is that the Liberals talk a tougher game on confronting Iran’s Islamist regime than they play.
