Jumbo Package: Ryan Grubb makes surprising OL announcement
· Yahoo Sports
Happy Friday, everyone. It’s March, so there is plenty going on around Alabama sports. The 4th-ranked Gym Tide face off against old rival and 6th-ranked Georgia, as both programs are enjoying something of a renaissance year. Baseball has an always tough trip to Lexington where 21st-ranked Kentucky awaits, and softball has a big home series this weekend.

The No. 6 Crimson Tide (24-0, 3-0 SEC) will host ninth-ranked Arkansas (22-2, 2-1 SEC) beginning Friday, March 13 at Rhoads Stadium.
Alabama enters the series after an 8-1 midweek victory over Samford on Tuesday, March 10. The Crimson Tide also opened conference play with a sweep on the road at Ole Miss, winning 5-3 and 13-2 in a doubleheader Friday, March 6, before finishing the series with a 2-1 victory Sunday, March 8, in Oxford, Mississippi.
Arkansas arrives coming off its own opening SEC series last weekend, winning two of three games against now-No. 13 Georgia.
As you already know, the men’s basketball team will face off against 15-seed Ole Miss tonight, which was the most unlikely of three possible opponents coming into the tournament. They’ll have to deal with a big man who has a history against the Tide.
Big man Malik Dia played a season-low eight minutes against Alabama due to a performance-related coaching decision. In turn, a repeat of his 23-point, 19-rebound performance to upset Alabama last January was hard to accomplish.
Since Feb. 11, the forward hasn’t played less than 20 minutes.
Aiden Sherrell will need to have his best day. Guard AJ Storr is also a problem after scoring 27 against Alabama in this year’s previous meeting. He scored 19 last night to lead Ole Miss, with Dia adding 17.
In spring practice news, Ryan Grubb spoke to reporters yesterday and made a surprising proclamation.
Entering spring practice, it seemed Alabama football might have a position battle at left tackle. On Thursday, following the Crimson Tide’s third spring session, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb dispelled that notion.
“It’s not,” Grubb said when asked how close the battle was. “He’s the starter.”
Grubb was speaking of Jackson Lloyd. The redshirt freshman took reps with the first-team offensive line earlier on Thursday, during a media observation period of practice.
This caused quite a stir. My read is that perhaps Jackson needs a little bit of confidence at this stage, and Grubb is simply injecting him with some. These types of absolute statements are always subject to change based on performance, but it will be great if Lloyd is ready to reach his vast potential.
Grubb seems pleased with the running backs.
“Sky’s the limit for him,” Grubb said of Crowell. “I mean, I think that’s a really, really competitive room. I look at the guys that have been there, you know, Daniel and Kevin, that have been — just even their preparation and their mindset right now is really different. I mean, just Daniel looks great. He’s hovering in the low 230s. You know, last year at this time he was probably in the 250s. And he just looks quicker, more powerful, sudden. And Kevin’s got another step to him right now. So I think that competition in the room with those guys in AK Dear is really the whole room has gotten better.
Ryan Coleman-Williams was asked about his approach to this spring, and he seems to be embracing a leadership role.
“Just because we have such a young team, like I’m considered an old head,” Coleman-Williams said. “So, just having guys just coming to me for advice, and it just flies by. From my first game against Western Kentucky to now getting ready to play Eastern Carolina, it’s just, it’s crazy.”
Coleman-Williams is entering his third year in the Alabama program. In his previous 27 games, he has caught 97 passes for 1,554 yards and 12 touchdowns. With Germie Bernard turning pro and five other receivers entering the transfer portal, the Tide needs Coleman-Williams to step into a leadership role this offseason. What does that look like to the junior wideout?
“Setting an example, that’s the obvious,” Coleman-Williams said. “Just the way you carry yourself on and off the field. But whenever we’re on the field, you don’t have to be the most vocal guy, but just making an impact, whether that’s making a throw, and (saying), ‘Good catch.’ It doesn’t take much, so really just be that guy for your teammate.”
A freshman WR caught everyone’s eye, though.

Last, Auburn blew a 20-point lead in the SEC Tournament, and will likely be one of the first four left out of the dance as a result. The refs were the reason they lost, per usual, and Bruce Pearl made an ass of himself behind his son’s bench.

That’s about it for today. Have a great weekend.
