Springboks to deploy ‘split squad’ system in 2026
· The South African

The Springboks have a jampacked 2026 season coming up, which will include a warm up game against the Barbarians, followed by 12 Tests.
With Rassie Erasmus needing to build and balance his squad with the 2027 Rugby World Cup in mind, it’s understood that the Springbok coach will once again opt for some carefully considered rotation in selection this season.

In the season-opener against the Barbarians, some first-choice stars in need of game-time are expected to be picked alongside some of the younger players who the national coaches want to have a closer look at.
The strongest possible side is then likely to be selected for the first two July Tests against England and Scotland, before a ‘B team’ of sorts is picked to face Wales on 18 July.
For the four subsequent Tests matches against the All Blacks, Erasmus is unlikely to experiment too much, but some rotation can be expected considering that there are no breaks in between these high intensity games that take place over four consecutive weeks.
However, Erasmus will hope that if results go in favour of the Springboks early on, that he will be able to mix and match with his touring selections for the final ‘Greatest Rivalry’ Test in the USA on 12 September.
Similarly, it’s expected that a host of first-choice players will be rested for the one-off Tests against the Wallabies in Perth.
There have also been some increasing whispers to suggest that the end-of-year Nations Championship games will be used to expose a few more young players, but of course if the Springboks do progress to the finals weekend on 29 November, they will then want to deploy their strongest possible team.
All in all, it will be interesting to see how Erasmus handles this selection juggling act, but rest assured there is plenty of rotation set to come this year.
