CHICAGO — No. 6 (AP) Iowa State returns to the Sweet 16 for the third time in five seasons under head coach T.J. Otzelberger, continuing one of the most consistent runs in program history. The Cyclones enter Friday night’s matchup at 29-7 overall after dominant NCAA Tournament wins over Tennessee State (108-74) and Kentucky (82-63), advancing despite the absence of their top player for nearly the entire tournament run.

Tennessee, ranked No. 23 (AP) , arrives battle-tested out of the SEC under veteran coach Rick Barnes. The Volunteers present a physical, disciplined challenge, setting up a contrast in styles against an Iowa State team that thrives on pace, spacing and disruptive defense.

The biggest storyline centers on All-American forward Joshua Jefferson. Listed as questionable on the final player availability report, Jefferson has not played since logging just two and a half minutes in the first-round win over Tennessee State. His status looms large, as his averages include 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game and serves as the focal point of the Cyclones’ offense.

In Jefferson’s absence, Iowa State has leaned on its depth and balance. Milan Momcilovic has continued his breakout season, shooting 49.3% from three-point range with a program-record 134 makes, while Tamin Lipsey has anchored the defense as the program’s all-time steals leader. Freshman guard Killyan Toure has also taken on an increased role, providing steady production on both ends of the floor.

The Cyclones’ resume reflects sustained excellence. Iowa State opened the season 16-0 — the best start in program history — and has remained ranked in the AP Top 25 for 51 consecutive weeks. Under Otzelberger, ISU has become a fixture in March, reaching multiple Sweet 16s and building a roster capable of making a deeper run.

Friday’s matchup comes at the United Center in Chicago, where Iowa State is still searching for its first win (0-3 all-time). Tipoff is set for 9:10 p.m. CT on TBS, with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line — a stage the program has not reached since 2000.

With Jefferson’s availability uncertain, can Iowa State’s depth continue to carry the load, or will the Cyclones need their All-American back to advance?
