Eskom extends rooftop solar registration fee waiver to September

· The South African

Eskom has extended its registration fee waiver for customers using Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) systems, such as rooftop solar, from 31 March to 30 September 2026.

Since March 2023, the power utility has waived registration fees and the cost of smart meters for households with photovoltaic (PV) installations of up to 50kW. This policy will remain in effect for the next six months, allowing eligible customers to save up to R9 132 in connection costs.

ESKOM EXPANDS SUPPORT FOR ROOFTOP SOLAR USERS

Eskom also announced that it is advancing the introduction of a prepaid option for residential customers who wish to install rooftop solar systems while remaining on prepaid metering.

The utility said customers may retain their existing setup or, where required, have a smart meter installed at no cost, while still qualifying for the waiver for systems of up to 50kW.

“The option is currently being tested, with the intention of proceeding to a broader rollout once initial implementation requirements are confirmed,” Eskom said.

GROWING SHIFT TO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

As more households and businesses turn to rooftop solar, Eskom said it remains committed to enabling safe connections while supporting South Africa’s transition to cleaner energy.

“National regulations require all SSEG systems under 100kW that are connected to an electricity network, including rooftop solar systems, to be registered with the customer’s electricity supplier, either Eskom or the local municipality.

“Registration helps ensure these installations are known, safely connected, and responsibly integrated into the electricity network,” the utility added.

To simplify compliance, Eskom will continue waiving registration-related charges for eligible systems until 30 September 2026.

Customers are required to submit the following:

  • A Certificate of Compliance (CoC)
  • An inverter test certificate
  • A test report for the installation

These systems may be signed off by a person registered with the Department of Employment and Labour, helping to reduce costs and processing time.

More information on SSEG registration is available on Eskom’s website.
