“Upon our arrival, our crews were met with heavy smoke conditions, they forced their way into the house, started their primary search, and immediately found two elderly occupants in the house,” Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop told reporters.

Life-saving measures were attempted on the elderly man and woman before paramedics transported them to hospital, where they died.

“I want to extend our deepest condolences to those impacted by this double fatal fire,” Jessop said. “These scenes are always very difficult for all first-responders.”

The fire chief noted that crews had near-zero visibility inside the home due to the “significant amount of smoke damage.”

The man and woman were found together.

Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Police and the Fire Marshal’s office are investigating the cause and circumstances surrounding the blaze, and whether the home was up to standard with Ontario’s Fire Code, but the fire chief said there is nothing to suggest the fire is suspicious.

The origin of the fire is unknown, he added, but it appears to have started near the bedroom.
