With rival Michigan claiming the national championship on Monday, the 2025-26 college basketball season is officially over. That means the final AP rankings were released on Tuesday, with the Spartans coming in just outside the top 10. Michigan State finished the season at No. 11 nationally.

Among Big Ten teams, only three from the league were ahead of the Spartans in the final poll: Michigan (No. 1), Illinois (No. 5) and Purdue (No. 6). Other Big Tens included in the poll that came after Michigan State were Nebraska (No. 14), Iowa (No. 15) and Wisconsin (No. 25).

Michigan State finished the season with a 28-7 overall record and reached the Sweet 16 for a second straight season and third time in the last four years. This is the second straight season that Michigan State ended the year ranked in the final AP poll, coming in at No. 7 in the final rankings last year.

Michigan State will now turn its focus to the offseason and what should be a highly-anticipated 2026-27 campaign. The Spartans have already been considered a common top 10 selection in the way-too-early rankings rolling out this week, with some even having the Spartans as their preseason No. 1 team.
