Patriots reportedly make decision with defensive coordinator role

· Yahoo Sports

The New England Patriots decided to move defensive coordinator Terrell Williams to another high-ranking role on the staff, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That leaves an opening for the team to hire a new defensive coordinator.

The top candidate for that role will instantly be inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr, who took over the play-calling duties for the Patriots during the season, after Williams was forced to step away from coaching due to a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Kuhr stepped in as the interim play-caller and had the defense performing at an elite level. When healthy, the Patriots had one of the best defenses in the league in 2025. However, Kuhr's real star-shining moment came during the postseason, when his defense carried the team all the way to the Super Bowl.

Even in the Super Bowl LX loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Kuhr's defense did its part in limiting the Seahawks' offense to only one touchdown and 335 total yards. It was an impressive showing against a unit that ranked second only to the Los Angeles Rams in points scored (29.2) during the season.

The Patriots will obviously go through the process, but it would make the most sense to reward Kuhr by giving him the coordinator title.
