Tony Dungy is “likely out” after 17 seasons as a regular on NBC’s football coverage while the network eyes an overhaul, The Athletic reported this week.

Football Night in America” leaned on Dungy’s experience as a Super Bowl-winning player and head coach to provide analysis on the pregame show for “Sunday Night Football.”

But “sources briefed on the move” told the sports outlet that the Pro Football Hall of Famer’s days are probably numbered, though it’s not fully decided yet.

Dungy could be given an “emeritus” role as an occasional contributor, sources told the outlet.

NBC declined to comment to The Athletic.

Dungy, 70, has at times grabbed unwanted attention for right-wing takes. He spread a claim that schools were using litter boxes for students who identify as cats.

In a 2023 report, Dungy’s own network’s news division counted at least a dozen of his tweets “that are critical of same-*** marriage, homosexuality and the LGBTQ ‘lifestyle.’

That same year, a Washington Post “Perspective” essay by Kevin B. Blackistone accused him of “using his athletic celebrity coupled with his religiosity as deodorant for a theme of intolerance.”
