Miami earned an 11 seed in March Madness after a 31-1 season, becoming just the fifth team in 35 years to finish the regular season undefeated. The regular season champions of the Mid-American Conference are led by MAC Coach of the Year Travis Steele and MAC Player of the Year Peter Suder.

The RedHawks first opponent in the NCAA Tournament is 11-seed SMU. The Mustangs enter the tournament with a 20-13 overall record, finishing 11th in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Coached by Andy Enfield, SMU has been led all season by senior Boopie Miller.
