Spencer Jones isn’t going to be on the big league roster breaking camp, but that doesn’t mean he can’t crack the team at some point. Despite an impressive performance during Spring Training, the left-handed batting outfielder will still begin the season in the minor leagues.

Jones has been one of the most talked-about players in camp due to his power at the dish. The big guy can really swing it power-wise. However, his strikeout issues are tough to ignore and are certainly part of the reason for him not being in the show.

Even when a prospect like Jones performs well in Spring Training, teams need to consider whether there’s a clear role on the big league roster. In Jones’ case, the Yankees already have a crowded outfield, which will make it difficult for him to get consistent playing time.

According to Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com, that lack of opportunity will ultimately determine where Jones begins the year.

“Despite a stellar spring, with four home runs in 21 at-bats, you knew Spencer Jones - without a path to regular playing time - would be optioned to Triple-A,” he wrote.

For the Yankees, there eventually needs to be a decision made on Jones. It’s either time to play him or let him walk.
