NHL imposes new $1M fine on Ottawa Senators

· Yahoo Sports

The NHL has modified the disciplinary penalty previously issued to the Ottawa Senators over the 2021 trade involving Evgenii Dadonov. The league confirmed that Ottawa will now pay a $1 million CAD fine and receive the 32nd overall pick in the 2026 draft instead of forfeiting a first-round selection entirely.

The original sanction came after Dadonov was traded from Ottawa to the Vegas Golden Knights in July 2021. The situation later resurfaced when Vegas attempted to trade the forward to the Anaheim Ducks in March 2022. That trade was later invalidated due to issues related to the player’s no-trade list.

What did Senators do? Well, they failed to disclose Dadonov’s 10-team no-trade list to Vegas.

Initially, Ottawa faced the loss of a first-round draft pick in either the 2024, 2025, or 2026 draft. However, the franchise asked the league to reconsider the penalty. The organization cited new ownership and oversight under owner Michael Andlauer as a key factor in the request.

After reviewing the case, the NHL decided to adjust the punishment. Ottawa will now select 32nd overall in the 2026 draft. The Senators must also pay a $1 million fine, which the league confirmed will go to the NHL Foundation Canada.

“The Senators’ penalty will now involve the forfeiture of their first round pick in 2026 in favor of the right instead to pick 32nd overall in the 2026 NHL Draft (the last pick in the first round),” The NHL’s statement reads. “The Club will not be permitted to trade or transfer its right to the 32nd overall selection in the 2026 Draft. In addition, the Club will pay a fine of $1 Million (CDN).”

On the ice, Ottawa remains competitive this season. The Senators hold a 32-23-9 record with 73 points. Tim Stützle leads the team with 30 goals and 70 points as the club pushes to stay in the playoff race.
